Haven't you heard that Bob's™ has the best oatmeal in the world? It's true—this variety of oats took home the winning trophy at both the 2009 and 2016 Golden Spurtle World Porridge Making Championship in Carrbridge, Scotland and is now known as World Champion Oatmeal. It makes a delightful, full-bodied hot cereal with an appealing texture.

Details

Steel Cut Oats are simply whole oat groats that have been cut into neat little pieces on a steel buhr mill. We use high protein, whole grain oats that have been lightly toasted to create our hearty steel cut oats. Also known as Irish oats or pinhead oats, steel cut oats create a chewy, full-bodied hot cereal.

Steel Cut Oats have always been a universal customer favorite at Bob's Red Mill. Their robust oat flavor, texture and ease of preparation plus proven nutritious benefits and cholesterol reduction make them a perfect breakfast. A few years back we learned of the World Championship Porridge Competition in Scotland called the “Golden Spurtle.” At that point we had yet to discover the spurtle, a centuries-old Scottish wooden porridge stirring implement.

The Bob's Red Mill team traveled to Carrbridge, Scotland to compete in the Golden Spurtle World Porridge Championship. We competed against fourteen other teams from around the globe. Our team's belief in our porridge skills and our consistently superior oats never wavered. That crisp October morning all teams paraded through town behind a bagpipe band. After three heats of competition, we remained one of five finalists. All five finalists prepared their traditional recipe (oats, salt and water) for the judges. Finally, the announcement: “Bob's Red Mill, is the new Golden Spurtle World Porridge Champion.”

The Bob's Red Mill Steel Cut Oats we knew to be superior were now proven the “WORLD'S BEST”. The simple, winning recipe using oats, salt and water is on our package so you can make the World's Best Oatmeal at home.

Oats are a notoriously healthy breakfast choice, being high in soluble fiber and protein. They are also incredibly versatile. Steel cut oats can be used to make risotto, pilaf, dumplings, arancini and more! Browse our extensive collection of recipes using our steel cut oats here.

Just like my grandmother's porridge
Growing up my biggest treat when visiting my Scottish grandparents was breakfast. It was always porridge cooked very slowly overnight by my grandmother in a double saucepan. Over half a century later, I finally found oatmeal that makes porridge just like I remember as a child. Only it doesn't take all night!

Full bodied oats
I used to dislike oatmeal as it was like wallpaper paste, but Bob's has full bodied oats that is good to cook, and it's tender to eat.

Nice microwaveable meal
My recipe was two thirds cup oats just less than one cup water and five or six minutes on high. Various add ins include all sorts of baking chips, nuts and or coconut flakes..A non sweet version could include shredded cheese.

There is such a difference
These steel cut oats have a great day texture when cooked. The grain holds its shape without turning to mush. I use these for a savory side dish with leeks and sun-dried tomatoes. Creamy, toothy, and amazing.

Since 1/4 cup dry is 1 serving; how much does this equal in COOKED oats? Please add this info on your labels.
HOLLY M on Jan 11, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I just made eight servings using 4 cups water, 2 cups oats and it measured out to be aalmost 4 cups cooked. So if I did my math right 1/4 cup dry equals 1/2 cup cooked for the 140 cal 2.5g fat. I eat ONE cup servings so 280 cal 5g fat.
I notice you sell quick cooking steel cut through Costco, and I prefer the regular steel cut, which require overnight soaking. What is the difference in the nutritional value?
A shopper on Jan 20, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The biggest nutritional differences are the Steel Cut Oats per 1/4 cup have 170 calories, 5gr fiber and 7gr protein. While the Quick Cooking Steel Cut Oats per 1/4 cup have 140 calories, 4 gr fiber and 4gr protein.
May I know how much %gluten it has?
A shopper on Nov 4, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Technically this is gluten free, however it is not packaged in our gluten free dedicated facility. We do have gluten free available through our website.
Is there anyway you can make smaller amounts then what is printed on the bag? Only one person eats this in my family.
A shopper on Nov 13, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I use half a cup with a little under a cup of water for 2. Halving the amounts works but I suggest using less water as the smaller the batch you make the “thinner” it is. You can always add water to your own taste. Enjoy 😊

Health differences between the steel cut oats and extra thick rolled oats?
paige l on Nov 26, 2017
BEST ANSWER: There is really no health difference between these two. You might see a slight difference in fiber per serving, but they are the same product just processed a little differently for shape.
How to open bag?
A shopper on Nov 9, 2017
BEST ANSWER: If this is the small bag from our website, you can simply cut the top off at the markings.

If this is the costco bag...
To use the re-sealable feature, do not cut the top with scissors. There is a red line towards the top front of the bag with a slight perforation and a tab that you pull to tear it open and undo the ‘Ziploc’ or re-sealable closure. It can be difficult to get closure to snap shut when you first open the bag due to its mass. Our suggestion here is to make sure there is no air left in the bag which makes it easier to apply pressure on the back and front side of the seal so it snaps shut. As you use the Oats, the bag is easier to close.

We realize that this is not the most user friendly bag and we understand if this is a bit frustrating. We are limited to this bag due to our packaging machines and the requirements of Costco: currently this is the best option we have and we are working on some updates that should improve this in the future. Please feel free to contact us if you have any more questions and have a wonderful day.
