Haven't you heard that Bob's™ has the best oatmeal in the world? It's true - this variety of oats took home the winning trophy at both the 2009 and 2016 Golden Spurtle World Porridge Making Championship in Carrbridge, Scotland and is now known as World Champion Oatmeal. It makes a delightful, full-bodied hot cereal with an appealing texture.

Details

Steel Cut Oats are simply whole oat groats that have been cut into neat little pieces on a steel buhr mill. We use high protein, whole grain oats that have been lightly toasted to create our hearty steel cut oats. Also known as Irish oats or pinhead oats, steel cut oats create a chewy, full-bodied hot cereal.

Steel Cut Oats have always been a universal customer favorite at Bob's Red Mill. Their robust oat flavor, texture and ease of preparation plus proven nutritious benefits and cholesterol reduction make them a perfect breakfast. A few years back we learned of the World Championship Porridge Competition in Scotland called the “Golden Spurtle.” At that point we had yet to discover the spurtle, a centuries-old Scottish wooden porridge stirring implement.

The Bob's Red Mill team traveled to Carrbridge, Scotland to compete in the Golden Spurtle World Porridge Championship. We competed against fourteen other teams from around the globe. Our team's belief in our porridge skills and our consistently superior oats never wavered. That crisp October morning all teams paraded through town behind a bagpipe band. After three heats of competition, we remained one of five finalists. All five finalists prepared their traditional recipe (oats, salt and water) for the judges. Finally, the announcement: “Bob's Red Mill, is the new Golden Spurtle World Porridge Champion.”

The Bob's Red Mill Steel Cut Oats we knew to be superior were now proven the “WORLD'S BEST”. The simple, winning recipe using oats, salt and water is on our package so you can make the World's Best Oatmeal at home.

Oats are a notoriously healthy breakfast choice, being high in soluble fiber and protein. They are also incredibly versatile. Steel cut oats can be used to make risotto, pilaf, dumplings, arancini and more! Browse our extensive collection of recipes using our steel cut oats here.

My favorite five star way to start every morning
I eat this every morning and absolutely love it. I cook it with some chopped dried fruit and chopped candied ginger. It has lowered my blood pressure and cholesterol and it is fabulously delicious.

Best Breakfast Ever
We have a bowl of this oatmeal every day that we are at home, we add some blueberries, bananas, and/or nuts - yum! I just put it on the stove after I make my coffee, set it on low, get dressed, stir it a couple of times, and by the time I get back to the kitchen, it is ready to eat!

Easy Switch to Healthier Breakfast
I found myself going through a stick of butter every work week because I put it on my morning bagel. I randomly bought a bag of this stuff because it was on sale at the grocery store. I like it so much I ordered four cases from the website! I make 2 cups (dry) at a time then divide it up and I have my breakfasts ready for the week! I add a little bit of water and microwave for 2:22 and it's as good as fresh. Sometimes I cut up an apple, sometimes brown sugar and milk, sometimes cranberries. I like it, plus I haven't had butter in a month and haven't missed it.

These are undoubtably the best!
We've been eating these for years and never disappointed. We eat them plain with just a bit of turbinado sugar. In summer we prefer fresh fruits.

My one and only
I love the crunchy goodness of steel cut oats. I've always loved oatmeal and now I prefer steel cut. Bob's Red Mill is the best I've tried. I add walnuts, some Bob's turbinado sugar and a little milk. Oh so good!

We have been eating this particular oatmeal for years from Amazon. But their supply has been irregular and the prices have been jacked up lately. So buying form the source is the best way for us to get a regular supply at a reasonable price. Thanks, Bob's Red Mill!

Is there anyway you can make smaller amounts then what is printed on the bag? Only one person eats this in my family.
A shopper on Nov 13, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I use half a cup with a little under a cup of water for 2. Halving the amounts works but I suggest using less water as the smaller the batch you make the “thinner” it is. You can always add water to your own taste. Enjoy 😊
I notice you sell quick cooking steel cut through Costco, and I prefer the regular steel cut, which require overnight soaking. What is the difference in the nutritional value?
A shopper on Jan 20, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The biggest nutritional differences are the Steel Cut Oats per 1/4 cup have 170 calories, 5gr fiber and 7gr protein. While the Quick Cooking Steel Cut Oats per 1/4 cup have 140 calories, 4 gr fiber and 4gr protein.
What is the difference in the milling processes between the steel cut oats and the quick steel cut oats?

Quick Cooking Steel Cut Oats
Quick Cooking Steel Cut Oats
BEST ANSWER: Made from the same oats that are processed into our Steel Cut Oats. Quick Steel Cuts are produced on a specialized rotary granulator mill to be smaller and thinner than traditional steel cut oats.
What is the best way to store the oats when you have a big bunch and there is only one of you so might take a year to eat? Can oats be frozen?
A shopper on Dec 1, 2017
BEST ANSWER: This product is best kept in an airtight container in a cool, dry place, preferably the fridge or freezer. It will keep up to 24 months when stored properly.
Health differences between the steel cut oats and extra thick rolled oats?
paige l on Nov 26, 2017
BEST ANSWER: There is really no health difference between these two. You might see a slight difference in fiber per serving, but they are the same product just processed a little differently for shape.
How to open bag?
A shopper on Nov 9, 2017
BEST ANSWER: If this is the small bag from our website, you can simply cut the top off at the markings.

If this is the costco bag...
To use the re-sealable feature, do not cut the top with scissors. There is a red line towards the top front of the bag with a slight perforation and a tab that you pull to tear it open and undo the ‘Ziploc’ or re-sealable closure. It can be difficult to get closure to snap shut when you first open the bag due to its mass. Our suggestion here is to make sure there is no air left in the bag which makes it easier to apply pressure on the back and front side of the seal so it snaps shut. As you use the Oats, the bag is easier to close.

We realize that this is not the most user friendly bag and we understand if this is a bit frustrating. We are limited to this bag due to our packaging machines and the requirements of Costco: currently this is the best option we have and we are working on some updates that should improve this in the future. Please feel free to contact us if you have any more questions and have a wonderful day.
May I know how much %gluten it has?
A shopper on Nov 4, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Technically this is gluten free, however it is not packaged in our gluten free dedicated facility. We do have gluten free available through our website.
