Countdown to Cozy: Easiest Potluck Prep

Countdown to Cozy: Easiest Potluck Prep

The holidays are all about gathering and celebrating, but when you're in the thick of—well—life, hosting can feel like a big lift. Enter the potluck: a laid-back, collaborative get-together where everyone brings something to the table (literally) and sharing is the entire point. It’s not about perfection—it’s about people showing up, contributing what they can, and creating something wonderful together.

Need a little inspiration? Meet our new favorite potluck, Soupmas. Picture it—bowls pass from hand to hand as neighbors and friends share steaming pots of soup and fresh, tasty breads. It's fun, it's delicious and best of all, it's easy. Soup is a natural for potlucks: it’s a fantastic make-ahead meal, it tastes even better after a day or two in the fridge, and it’s endlessly customizable.

We’re here to make it even simpler. With our quality, easy-to-use ingredients, whipping up something homemade is no problem. Plus, we’ve gathered our favorite soup and bread recipes and built a 7-day planning timeline to help you create something truly special—a community of friends.

7 Days Before: Stir Up a Plan

  • Pick the date, time and location.
  • Send out Soupmas invites with the theme (soups + breads, cozy extras welcome).
  • Share the sign-up categories: soups, breads/rolls, toppings (cheese, herbs, croutons), drinks and desserts.

6 Days Before: Balance the Bowls

  • Create a shared list so soups don’t overlap (see our recipe suggestions below!).
  • Encourage variety—veggie, meaty, spicy, mild.
  • Need to thicken chowder or stew? Our trusted Organic Unbleached White All-Purpose Flour does the trick, every time!

5 Days Before: Gear & Setup Check

  • Count your ladles, soup bowls, mugs and spoons.
  • Plan for slow cookers, hot plates or thermoses to keep soups warm.
  • Think about table space for crockpots and bread baskets, as well as outlets and extension cords for plug-in cookers. Note: plan your guests' route of travel to avoid tripping hazards, or use gaffer's tape to secure any cords to the floor.

4 Days Before: Soupmas Reminders

  • Remind guests of their sign-ups, and invite them to bring containers for leftover soup!
  • Encourage guests to bring their own ladles.
  • Share some cozy inspiration! Our Gather & Give Guide is chock-full of crockpot-worthy recipes.

3 Days Before: Your Soup + Extras

  • Choose your Soupmas contribution—your signature soup and bread.
  • Shop for ingredients and extras like butter or crackers.
  • Inviting gluten free guests? Bob’s Red Mill Gluten Free 1-to-1 Baking Flour is a quick and easy swap for biscuits, flatbread or even dumplings.

2 Days Before: Cozy Touches

  • Set up tables with soup stations (soups in the center, breads and toppings nearby).
  • Gather labels, markers and trivets/pot holders.
  • Add cozy touches: candles, blankets or a wintry playlist.

1 Day Before: Final Simmer

  • Prep or par-cook your soup (most taste even better after a night in the fridge!).
  • Need a speedy side? Our Golden Cornbread Mix is your shortcut to scratch-quality cornbread, thanks to our signature flour blend.
  • Double-check drinks, ice and any last-minute supplies.

Soupmas Day: Ladles Up!

  • Before guests arrive, heat your soup/bread and clear your stovetop/oven in case people need to heat their offerings.
  • Label each pot and set out toppings.
  • Welcome everyone, grab a bowl and toast to Soupmas!

We've crafted the perfect, easy-to-make recipes to make all your Soupmas dreams come true!

With Soupmas and Bob’s Red Mill, your holiday potluck becomes something bigger: a homemade celebration made for sharing.
