Instructions
Combine Bob’s Red Mill Chana Dal, turmeric, salt, cardamom, bay leaves and water in a medium pot. Bring to a boil then reduce heat to medium and gently boil until chana dal is soft and the mixture has thickened, about 40 minutes.
Remove chana dal from heat and discard bay leaf. Mash dal with a potato masher into a sauce-like consistency. Set aside and keep warm.
In a small sauté pan, heat oil over medium-high heat. Add whole cloves and cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add garlic and sauté until light golden, about 30 seconds more. Add red pepper flakes and remove from heat. Immediately stir into the chana dal and serve.
