Details

Quick Cooking Steel Cut Oats are simply whole oat groats that have been cut into neat little pieces on a specialized rotary granulator mill. We use high protein, whole grain oats that have been lightly toasted to create our hearty steel cut oats. Also known as Irish oats or pinhead oats, steel cut oats create a chewy, full-bodied hot cereal. Our Quick Cooking Steel Cut Oats are cut a little smaller than our Regular Steel Cut Oats, making them ready in a scant 5 to 7 minutes. These oats make a delightful hot cereal when you're on the go!

Steel Cut Oats have always been a universal customer favorite at Bob's Red Mill. Their robust oat flavor, texture and ease of preparation plus proven nutritious benefits and cholesterol reduction make them a perfect breakfast. A few years back we learned of the World Championship Porridge Competition in Scotland called the Golden Spurtle. At that point we had yet to discover the spurtle, a centuries-old Scottish wooden porridge stirring implement.

The Bob's Red Mill team traveled to Carrbridge, Scotland to compete in the Golden Spurtle World Porridge Championship. We competed against fourteen other teams from around the globe. Our team's belief in our porridge skills and our consistently superior oats never wavered. That crisp October morning all teams paraded through town behind a bagpipe band. After three heats of competition, we remained one of five finalists. All five finalists prepared their traditional recipe, oats, salt and water for the judges. Finally, the announcement: Bob's Red Mill, is the new Golden Spurtle World Porridge Champion! The Bob's Red Mill Steel Cut Oats we knew to be superior were now proven to be the WORLD'S BEST! The simple, winning recipe using oats, salt and water is on our package so you can make the World's Best Oatmeal at home.

Quick Cooking Steel Cut Oats
I really love the texture of these oats. I also love the fact that they are organic and are not sprayed with roundup to hasten the harvest like many oat growers do. I used to be able to buy them locally, but currently I can only find them online and buying direct from Bob's has given me the best price.

Best Oats Ever!
I love these quick cook steel cut oats! I found them at Costco, then they were gone. I ordered two bulk bags directly from Bob's Red Mill so that should last me a while! I like to add a little extra water and cook them for about 10 minutes.

A tasty, hearty breakfast with minimal preparation required. The texture of the oats is the perfect complement to their taste. And, the time savings compared to standard steel cut oats products makes them a practical everyday breakfast.

They stopped carrying these at Costco so I had them shipped from Walmart. Then they didn’t have them. So I bought a huge bag straight from you.

I LOVE ❤️ Bob’s Red Mill Quick Steel Cut Oats!!! Within 10 minutes from entering the kitchen, I’m eating a healthy breakfast!
I add a dab of Smart Balance Spread (“butter”), cinnamon & either pure maple syrup or honey or homemade jam and yum ... nothing better for breakfast or a snack! The entire family likes it.
For years (decades, actually) I had thought all oatmeal tasted like the paste-y Quaker Quick Oatmeal! Boy, was I wrong!!!
You must try Bob’s Red Mill Quick Steel Cut Oats!

This is a healthy breakfast. It helps to reduce cholesterol and keep your heart healthy. Because it is filling it may also aid in weight loss. Also if you are in a rush in the mornings the whole process of making breakfast is a mere 10 to 15 minutes from start to finish

What is the cooking time for Quick Cooking Steel Cut Oats in the pressure cooker?
Colleen W on Jan 11, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Colleen, I would NOT cook them in the pressure cooker. You are talking about QUICK cooking oats, right? They are cooked and ready to eat in under 10 minutes. It takes that time to get you pressure cooker under pressure. If you insist on using your pressure cooker then get the regular steel cut oats. No idea how to do that, never used my pressure cooker for oats. Yes, for a slow cooker overnight. Look on the internet for instructions how to do that.
Do these quick cooking steel cut oats have the same glycemic index as regular steel cut oats?
A shopper on Apr 14, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Hi! Unfortunately this is not something we test for.
Is the serving size before or after cooking?
A shopper on Apr 4, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The serving size is based on the dry, uncooked measurement.
I just bought a bag of Quick Cooking Steel Cut Oats, from Costco. I like making my oatmeal the night before with !/4 cup oatmeal to 1 Cup almond milk, then refrigerate over night, in the morning I add, 1 table spoon Chia Seeds, eat it that way, without cooking. Does anyone do that with steel oats?
Gerald A on Feb 10, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Have done this many times. Check out the recipe on Bobs website!
How do I make a single serving in a microwave?
connie d on Oct 31, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Stir water and oats in a LARGE container. (A 4-cup Pyrex measuring cup is about right, but might overflow, so put a paper towel under it to catch the overflow). Cook 3 minutes on high, then stir and cook additional 1 minute increments until the texture is to your taste. (4 minutes was plenty for me.) Enjoy!
I’ve just started using you’re quick cooking steel cut oats. I have tried to cook two servings in one bowl by using a half cup of oats and a full cup of water with a pinch of salt. I put it in the microwave for four minutes and it comes out very watery. So I’ve been adding 15 seconds to try and cook the oats. What I am finding is that I get boil over often. So I am trying to figure out how to prevent that. Do you have any suggestions?
A shopper on Dec 24, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I never understand why anyone wants to microwave for 4-5 min, when it takes the same amt of time to cook on the stove top. I use 1/4 c of oats to 1 1/4 C of water (yes, you read that right). Boil the water first, add the oats, lower the heat to medium-low, cook until slightly thick. Then I add a tsp of brown sugar and a tbl of raisins. The oatmeal thickens in about 3 more minutes. Maybe the raisins (or dried cranberries) does the trick. In any case, I get way more mileage out of the oats. Otherwise, I find it too thick.
How long do the quick cooking steel cut oats last if unopened?
A shopper on May 9, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Hi! This product will last through its 24 month shelf life and about 6 months beyond when stored in an air-tight container in a cool, dry place. There will be a specific best by date printed on each bag.
My daughter tells me that the quick cooking steel cuts lose something as far as health benefits is that true?
A shopper on Feb 13, 2018
BEST ANSWER: In comparing to Steel Cut Oats, the only difference for Quick Cooking Steel Cut Oats is they are milled into smaller pieces in comparison. There is no further processing.
What is the difference in the milling processes between the steel cut oats and the quick steel cut oats?

BEST ANSWER: Made from the same oats that are processed into our Steel Cut Oats. Quick Steel Cuts are produced on a specialized rotary granulator mill to be smaller and thinner than traditional steel cut oats.
The instructions do not say whether to cook the quick steel cut oats covered or uncovered. Should I assume uncovered? Regular steel cut oats say cook covered.
A shopper on Nov 28, 2017
BEST ANSWER: That's a good question. We recommend you cover this as it cooks. Here's a link to a recipe on our site. https://www.bobsredmill.com/recipes/how-to-make/basic-preparation-instructions-for-quick-cooking-steel-cut-oats/
How can I prepare these by just pouring the hot water on and letting them set? Same amount of water? How long does it set? I don't have access to a stove or microwave at work...but I do have a hot water dispenser.
Christina R on Oct 22, 2017
BEST ANSWER: here is what I do: I mix 4 cups of water and 2 cups of oats this makes enough for about 5 days or so and I keep it in the refrigerator. Then when I want some I cut off what I need when I want it and my wife puts sum in the Tupperware and takes to work heats it for a minute and you have hot Bob Steel Cut Oats which I have been eating for over 5 years every day I love them. Also I put honey, cinnamon, cranberry & vanilla in mine~! hope this helps...
