Vegetarian Recipes for the Grill

Summertime grilling may at first conjure visions of hot dogs and hamburgers. But the truth is, there are bountiful options for delicious vegetarian recipes for the grill as well! If you’re headed to a veggie-based gathering or are simply looking for a lighter take on traditional BBQ fare, you’ve come to the right spot. Here are some of the Bob’s Red Mill team’s favorite BBQ vegetarian recipes that are easy to create—and easy to eat—with a few tips for grilling veggies sprinkled here and there!

Bulgur Veggie Burgers with Lime Mayonnaise 

These Bulgur Veggie Burgers with Lime Mayonnaise from Epicurious highlight the flavors of bulgur with a hint of Middle Eastern spices. Bulgur is creatively combined with ingredients like pinto beans, cilantro, cloves, cumin, cayenne and fresh lime juice, for a burger that is bursting with all sorts of unique flavors. When it comes to vegetarian recipes for a BBQ, this one is sure to please even the most discerning of vegetarian guests. Recipe author Andrea Albin brushes her patties with oil before placing them on the grill and uses toasted multigrain bread as her base. If you’re looking for a delicious way to utilize our Bulgur, this recipe is one of our favorites. Plus, we just can’t get enough of that zesty lime mayonnaise as a topping! Feel free to dip your summertime sweet potato fries or smear right on top your veggie patty!

Tamarind Seitan Kabobs

As one of our favorite BBQ vegetarian recipes, it offers something that gives the feeling of meat, without actually including any meat at all! You can put anything on a kabob, throw it on the grill and guests will be thrilled. In the case of this recipe, Vegan Yum Yum combines seitan cubes with a tamarind glaze and broccoli for a show-stopping dish. This glaze is a good one to keep on hand to spice up a number of vegetarian recipes for the grill. It’s made with tamarind concentrate, agave nectar, tamari or soy sauce, cumin, ginger, salt, molasses and black pepper. All these delicious flavors add something extra special to these tasty kabobs. 

Vegan Quinoa and Black Bean Burgers

Once you replace your traditional meat patties with a vegetarian option, you might be surprised by just how much you actually love it. If you’re looking for a flavorful alternative to the standard burger, give this Vegan Quinoa and Black Bean Burger recipe a try. Beautifully done from Food by Maria, these burgers come complete with a “thousand island dressing” that’s created with vegan mayo, ketchup, onions, gherkins, lemon, olive oil and hot sauce. We love that Maria uses Bob’s Red Mill Black Beans and Bob’s Red Mill Quinoa to bring her incredible creation to life! After you’ve barbecued your burgers and arranged all the fixings, get ready to dive in and enjoy. There’s nothing quite like a burger in the height of summertime, after all. Both vegans and meat-eaters alike will be swooning over this recipe in just a single bite!

Grilled Corn on the Cob with Herb Butter

It’s hearty, fun to eat and has a flavor that seems to scream summertime. This recipe from Epicurious for Grilled Corn on the Cob with Herb Butter is well-seasoned and, well, perfect for the season. Author Chris Morocco combines unsalted butter, salt, freshly ground black pepper, cayenne pepper, vegetable oil and a brilliant mix of tender herbs like cilantro, chives and flat-leaf parsley for a fantastic take on an essential summertime dish. If you’re having a large backyard gathering, you can make this herb butter a day ahead and save some time the day of to relax, unwind and enjoy the upcoming BBQ festivities. 

Pesto-Corn Grilled Peppers

One of the tastiest ways to experiment with vegetarian recipes for the grill is to do as Taste of Home does and whip up a batch of these Pesto-Corn Grilled Peppers. The recipe comes from Rachael Marrier of Star Prairie, Wisconsin, who loves to use fresh produce from her garden when she’s grilling. The pepper halves are filled with a basil-seasoned corn mixture and incorporate ingredients like sunflower seeds, garlic and a bit of shredded Parmesan cheese for some extra flavor. Try using our Premium Shelled Sunflower Seeds which are an excellent source of vitamin E, protein and more.

Grilled Portobello Mushrooms with Garlic Butter

As The Spruce Eats notes, these mushrooms can be served with your favorite toppings and condiments, like lettuce, tomatoes and a special secret sauce. All you need to bring them to life are 12 portobello mushrooms, butter, extra virgin olive oil, lemon juice, garlic and black pepper. Once the mushrooms are nicely browned with their grill marks, it’s time to serve and enjoy. As an added tip for grilling mushrooms, we love the way it tastes when they’re marinated beforehand (so they can soak up all the wonderful flavors before hitting the heat). 

Grilled Veggie Pizza

If you’re a fan of all things pizza, grilled pizza is about to be a game-changer in your summer BBQ routine. Shake things up with this Grilled Veggie Pizza from Taste of Home. The recipe utilizes some of the best flavors of summer, like zucchini, sweet yellow and red peppers, onion, tomatoes and minced fresh basil to bring the creation to life. It calls for a pre-baked pizza crust to make things easy once you’re ready to throw it on the grill. Grilled Veggie Pesto Flatbread

You can use traditional pesto or get creative by mixing up a batch of our Hemp Pesto. Made with our Hulled Hemp Seed Hearts, this pesto will give your grilled veggie flatbread a mild, nutty flavor and a wealth of added nutritional benefits. Simple Grilled Potato Salad with Grilled Lemon Vinaigrette
