The different styles, toppings and flavors of a pizza is what makes it completely customizable for anyone to enjoy! Gluten free, vegetarian, veganno matter what your dietary preferences are, a delicious pizza can be made to meet your expectations. When thinking of your favorite pizza topping, what’s your go-to? Mushrooms? Veggies? Olives? The amount of vegetarian pizza topping combos out there is endless, and only limited by one’s imagination.

While we understand the definition of the “perfect” pizza varies from person to person, we’ve created a list of our favorite veggie pizza topping ideas to help spark your creativity when baking your next homemade pie.

Sun-Dried Tomato and Goat Cheese

It’s no secret that tomatoes pair well with pizza. They’re a sweet and savory ingredient that adds just the right amount of tanginess to any crust. For maximum flavor, sprinkle your pizza crust with sun-dried tomatoes, goat cheese, olives and basil. We feel it’s the perfect vegetarian comboyou’ll get the best of both sweet and savory flavors! When choosing your toppings, make sure that they’re fresh and if possible, try making the sun-dried tomatoes yourself!

Even though they are called sun-dried tomatoes, there are various ways to make them. While one method is, of course, drying them in the sun, this method can often be unreliable and time-consuming. An easier way of making sun-dried tomatoes is to dry them out in the oven. Just slice the tomatoes in half, remove what is attached to the stem, add a dash of salt and bake!

When choosing the right tomato to bake, the smaller the tomato, the better. Small campari or roma tomatoes work great with this method as they have less water and seeds, helping them to dry out faster. It’s also crucial that you press down on your tomatoes about halfway through the baking process to help release any extra moisture that they might have been holding on to.

Egg and Potato

When baked to perfection and topped on a pizza, eggs make an incredibly flavorful vegetarian pizza topping that is unlike any other! Depending on your personal preference, you can choose to leave the pizza in the oven a little longer to thoroughly cook the yolk, or remove the pizza while the yolk is still runny.

Whether you’re craving a savory dinner dish or a hearty breakfast meal, adding eggs as a topping allows you to create a pizza designed for your taste buds. By simply pairing the eggs with veggie pizza toppings like potatoes, spinach and salt, you can turn this tasty pizza into the perfect dish for brunch!

Adding eggs to your pizza is also a great way to give your dish a boost of high-quality protein. Eggs are an excellent source of protein and contain all the essential amino acids.

Grilled Eggplant

Eggplant as a veggie pizza topping is an excellent substitute in recipes that traditionally call for meat. When broiled or grilled, eggplant takes on a firm texture and smoky flavor, making it the perfect addition to any healthy pizza recipe. Its mild flavor allows it to be paired with most sauces and to serve as a less expensive yet equally delicious option to traditional pizza toppings. Paired with sauce, goat cheese and fresh herbs eggplant tops our list as one of the best vegetarian pizza toppings ideas!

Figs

Bring the taste of your favorite Italian restaurant home by adding fresh figs to your next pizza. A unique veggie pizza topping, fresh figs are delicious when paired with sharp cheese, blue cheese, or manchego.

For best results, add figs to the top of your pizza near the end of the baking process. Due to their high sugar content, fresh figs bake quickly, causing the fruit to burn faster than other toppings.

Veggie Meats

When using a recipe that calls for meat toppings, you can easily make it vegetarian by swapping in a veggie meat substitute. More and more brands are jumping on the veggie meat train, making it easy to find these delicious meat substitutes at almost any grocery store! By using ingredients like pea protein and wheat gluten, a variety of meatless meats are being made to satisfy all of your cravings. From sausages to deli slices to even Mexican-inspired soyrizo, you can find just about everything in a meatless form!

Brussels Sprouts

A veggie lover’s (and gardeners!) dream, this pizza is a delicious way to make sure you’re eating enough greens. Topped with Brussels sprouts for flavor, red cabbage for a pop of color and toasted walnuts for a tasty crunch, these veggie pizza toppings are all held together with creamy mozzarella cheese. When baked, the high temperature of the oven leaves the Brussels sprouts crispy and caramelized.

Pomegranate Seeds

When it comes to tasty vegetarian topping ideas, there is one that we wouldn’t dare skip over: pomegranate seeds! When buying the pomegranates to top your pizza with, make sure that you are choosing pomegranates that are a deep-red color and heavier than others. This usually means that the seeds are ready to eat and will offer a burst of sweetness to your pie.

While just pomegranate seeds alone will serve as a delicious veggie pizza topping, we love pairing them with other sweet and healthy toppings like kale and butternut squash. The flavors of these veggies compliment the pomegranate seeds and will produce a pizza full of flavor!

Margherita Pizza
