When you’re following a vegan lifestyle, you may think you need to steer clear of a beautiful stack of pancakes!

But did you know that even vegans can enjoy a tall stack of fluffy flapjacks? With a few delicious swaps and a handful of our favorite vegan pancake recipes, you’ll be in breakfast heaven.

Read on to get all the best tips, tricks and recipes from the Bob’s Red Mill team! Vegan, traditional and every pancake in between, we love them all and we’re here to help.

Vegan Ingredient Swaps for Pancakes

When it comes to vegan pancake recipes, it’s easy to swap out classic ingredients for vegan-friendly options. From milk to eggs, here are some of our favorite ingredient swaps we use when constructing vegan pancakes.

Milk

One of the easiest swaps for vegan pancake recipes is the milk. Instead of using traditional dairy milk, swap in your favorite nut milk or alternative milk. Depending on the pancake flavor you’re going for, you can get creative with your milk of choice! Use coconut milk to give a tropical feel to your pineapple coconut pancakes or go for almond milk and a bit of almond extract for something festive.

Egg

When creating an easy vegan pancake recipe, you’ll want to forego the eggs! Luckily, there are a few different options and simple swaps. In some vegan pancake recipes, you’ll find the egg has been left out entirely. In others, like this recipe from Loving it Vegan, you’ll find flax eggs. Some recipes even call for egg replacers.

Butter

Butter seems to be everywhere in pancakes! It’s used in the batter, slathered on top and even used to grease the pan. But if you’re making a vegan recipe for pancakes, you’ll want to leave out that creamy, dreamy butter and replace it with something else. There are many oils you can try, depending on whether you’re going for sweet, savory or no flavor at all. Try coconut, olive, avocado or walnut. You can also add applesauce or pumpkin puree to the batter to thicken it and use vegan spreads to top your pancakes. Getting creative with butter alternatives is half the fun of vegan pancake making—eating the end result is the other half!

Tips for Delicious Vegan Pancakes

When handling a vegan recipe for pancakes, there are a few simple tricks to take your flapjacks to the next level.

Use a Non-Stick Pan

Because vegan pancake batter has a different consistency than regular pancakes, using a non-stick pan will help. There’s nothing quite as frustrating as a sticking pancake, so make sure to keep your pan greased. We like using coconut oil for a bit of extra flavor, but sunflower oil works well for as flavorless oil option.

Turning vs. Flipping

You can flip vegan pancakes, but chances are, they may not fly through the air as carefree as regular pancakes will. Instead of flipping, you can also use a wooden spoon to gently turn the pancakes over in the pan or skillet.

Keep them Warm

Keep your pancakes warm on an oven-safe plate while you get your batch prepared. With all vegan pancake recipes, warm pancakes are delicious!

Make Vegan “Buttermilk”

If you’re feeling creative, many vegan chefs swear by creating a vegan “buttermilk” for their pancakes. Mix apple cider vinegar with dairy free milk to create a thick mixture that resembles the real deal. This will help your pancakes rise and keep them fluffy!

Separate Your Ingredients

Combine your wet and dry ingredients in separate bowls. After you’ve done this, fold the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix gently.

Try an Electric Griddle

An electric griddle ensures that you have the perfect temperature for your pancakes. If you’re cooking vegan pancake recipes for a crowd, the griddle will make life so much easier! Just heat it to 375°F, pour your batter and start flipping.

Eat Immediately!

Finally, the most important tip of all, eat your pancakes as soon as possible to ensure maximum deliciousness! If you don’t, you can wrap them in plastic wrap and keep your pancakes in the fridge for a couple days. When you’re ready to eat, just reheat, add your toppings and enjoy.

Our Favorite Vegan Pancake Recipes

Though we love all sorts of vegan pancakes, here are a few vegan pancake recipes that have stolen our pancake-loving hearts.

Blueberry Vegan Protein Pancakes

Vegan Pancake Recipes: Our Top Favorites | Bob's Red Mill Blog

This recipe for Blueberry Vegan Protein Pancakes comes to Bob’s Red Mill courtesy of Emilie from Emilie Eats. We love that if you have a blender and a few extra minutes in the morning, you can whip up this easy vegan pancake recipe in no time. These pancakes are delicious, fluffy and packed with protein. They’re also loaded with juicy blueberries and tons of plant-based fiber and protein. 1/2 cup of our Vanilla Protein Powder Nutritional Booster is the surprising ingredient that turns these little flapjacks into a powerhouse dish. We also love the addition of Gluten Free Rolled Oats and Flaxseed Meal for added nutrition. After you’ve stirred, poured, flipped and cooked, top these vegan pancakes with whatever you’d like! You can serve them with just butter and maple syrup or get more creative with extra berries and nut butter.

Allergy Friendly Pancakes

These Allergy Friendly Pancakes from Laura of Momables are gluten free, dairy free and egg free. It’s a kitchen-tested and kid-approved recipe that’s perfect for even the smallest vegan eaters in the household. They’re soft, fluffy and as Laura notes, can go beyond breakfast. Pack them in kids’ lunches as a sandwich alternative with a smear of nut butter and some fruit. You can even make this easy vegan pancake recipe for a breakfast-for-dinner, or “brinner,” treat. Use Gluten Free All Purpose Flour and flax meal as your base and add your favorite dairy free milk, like almond or rice milk. The real star of the pancake show in this recipe is the applesauce! It works as the perfect sweetener and acts as a way to bind it all together. Serve your pancakes with whatever you’d like, from a simple syrup to a fancy homemade jam.

Healthy Chocolate Protein Pancakes

Not only are these light and fluffy Chocolate Protein Pancakes beautiful, but they’re packed with plant-based protein and fiber in every bite. The recipe comes to Bob’s Red Mill courtesy of Angelina Papanikolaou from Baked Ambrosia and is a healthy and quick vegan recipe for pancakes. Angelina packs her pancakes with Gluten Free Oat Flour, Chocolate Protein Powder Nutritional Booster and cocoa powder. The coconut oil and almond milk add a smooth texture and wonderful flavor. Keep in mind, to keep these pancakes vegan, you’ll want to use a flax egg or egg replacer. If the batter seems too thick, you can add more milk, 1 tablespoon at a time, until you reach your desired consistency. Top with strawberries and bananas and a drizzle of homemade chocolate syrup! If we didn’t know any better, we’d almost think this pancake recipe was a dessert in disguise.

These Super Simple Vegan Pancakes from Cookie + Kate are, well, super, simple and vegan! When it comes to tried and true vegan pancake recipes, it’s good to have a go-to. Kate uses Bob’s Red Mill Whole Wheat Flour, almond milk, oil, maple syrup and vanilla to create a simple and versatile batter. Kate says the flour imparts a lovely, slightly nutty flavor in the pancakes. And as it’s higher in fiber and protein than all-purpose flour, these pancakes are more likely to fill you up and give you fuel until lunchtime. Kate also notes that her readers have suggested using Bob’s Red Mill Gluten Free All-Purpose Flour to turn these tiny morsels into a stack of gluten free flapjacks. Drizzle your pancakes with warm syrup and a spread of coconut oil, if you’d like. You can also top them with all sorts of fresh fruit, like sliced peaches or pears.

You might be missing a section in your great substitution description? Would there be any General advise on how to make your Pancakes into Higher rising Waffles? Or maybe that's available on the back of your pancake mix bags? Thank you! I've also seen some companies that have a Vegan mix that I simply add Water to instead of your substitutes ideas.
