Every good meal has to have tasty appetizers to kick things off. Thanksgiving dinner is no different! But sometimes it can be hard to come up with new or fresh ideas to try, especially during the busy holidays when your time is already precious. We decided to make things just a little bit easier on you by highlighting five of our favorite Thanksgiving appetizer recipes. Not only are they yummy, but they are also relatively easy to make and will impress even your pickiest guests. Plus, most are gluten free or vegan, which makes catering to dietary restrictions in your family so much simpler!

Gluten Free Blooming Onion

5 Delicious Thanksgiving Appetizers _ Bob’s Red Mill Is there any appetizer more delicious than a homemade blooming onion? Okay, it’s possible there are other things, but we bet you’ll be hard-pressed to come up with many after tasting all of this goodness. If you’re a socca and onion lover, you really can’t go wrong with this one. The crust comes out savory and crisp and is packed inside with sweet, creamy, delectable onion. It’s made with garbanzo bean flour and baking powder mixed with vinegar and water and flavored with seasoned salt. The onion is a peeled Vidalia cut into quarters, then thirds, then separated into petals. The great thing about this recipe is it only takes about 15 minutes to prep and 35 minutes to cook, which makes it both quick and easy, just the way we like it.

Bacon and Goat Cheese Mixed Greens Flatbread

This is another quickie recipe, taking only 15 minutes to prep and 15 minutes to cook. We use organic unbleached white all-purpose flour and active dry yeast for the dough, flavored with salt and a pinch of sugar. Once your flatbread is prepared, simply top it with crispy cooked bacon, goat cheese and grated Parmesan and pop it into the oven. You want your crust to be crispy and your cheese just starting to brown a bit before you remove it. Once it looks ready, top all of that melted decadence with mixed greens tossed with salt, pepper and olive oil, and garnish everything with plenty of sliced green onion. Slice your flatbread into small or large squares, serve and enjoy!

Cannellini Herb Dip

Cannellini beans are so versatile, aren’t they? Especially when using them as part of a vegan herb dip. This recipe is simple enough to prep, taking only 15 minutes, but it does require about 60-90 minutes to cook the beans completely. You also may need to soak them a bit before cooking, but that’s up to you. Once your beans are done cooking, the rest is easy. Simply drain (save the bean broth), put them in a food processor with flavorful ingredients like fresh chopped rosemary, chopped parsley, garlic cloves, salt, lemon juice and zest, then add a bit of olive oil. Blend everything until you reach desired consistency and voila! Amazing cannellini herb dip. You can serve it warm or cool, with crackers or slices of crunchy bread. Really, who knew beans could taste so good?

Rye Crackers

Rye crackers are wonderful as appetizers and finger food. They are healthy and make a crunchy, savory snack not many can turn down. You can try eating them topped with your favorite cheese or slathered in your favorite dip. You’d think making crackers would be difficult, but these are very easy to make. They require just 5 minutes of prep and 5-6 minutes to cook. You do have to let them cool a bit, but c’mon! How much easier can we make it? This recipe uses unbleached white all-purpose flour along with organic dark rye flour and baking powder, mixed with caraway seeds to add additional texture. Meanwhile, salt and sugar add a bit of flavoring. Cut your crackers into whatever shapes you like best and bake them until they are slightly browned. Cool, serve and store any extra in a sealed, airtight container.

Socca

This recipe is a Mediterranean favorite that is grain and wheat free, packed full of delicious flavor, and can be topped with just about anything you want. You can use socca for flatbread pizzas, or simply top it with all your favorite toppings. This socca is made using garbanzo bean flour and is seasoned with salt, pepper and garlic powder. It only takes about 5 minutes of prep time and 20 minutes to cook, making it so easy we think it should be a staple in every wheat and grain free household! If you want a socca that is softer, try using olive oil in the recipe. However, if you prefer a crispier socca, just skip the olive oil and you should be good to go. You can also make this socca in different shapes. Try square pans, round pans and even muffin pans for little socca bites you can top with goodies like tomatoes and mozzarella cheese. Socca it up and get creative, foodie friends!
