In a medium bowl, mix sugar, cornstarch and salt.
Place berries directly into a 9 x 13-inch baking dish or 10-inch Dutch oven (with legs, if you’re cooking over a campfire). Toss with sugar mixture.
Sprinkle cake mix evenly over berries. Arrange butter slices evenly across the top of the dry mix. Do not stir.
Preheat oven to 375°F. Bake 35–45 minutes, until topping is golden and fruit is bubbling at the edges. Cool for 15 minutes before serving.
Prepare a medium bed of coals (charcoal or well-burned wood embers).
Place Dutch oven on a small bed of coals (8–10 briquettes or a ring of glowing wood embers) for bottom heat. Place 16–18 coals evenly on the lid to create top heat.
Bake for 35–45 minutes, turning the Dutch oven and lid 90 degrees every 10–15 minutes for even cooking.
The cake is done when the top is golden and the fruit is bubbling at the edges.
Carefully remove from heat and let cool at least 15 minutes before serving.
