Summer is just around the corner and for some of you that might include taking a trip or two! Preparing your own travel snacks is a great idea to try before your next flight. You save money by not buying expensive meals and snacks in the terminal and it's easy to make allergen-friendly things when you prepare them yourself. Keeping in mind the travel limitations for air travel,Ive got a whole bunch of tasty and nutritious recipe ideas for travel snacks, great for adults and kids alike.
My favorite travel snacks for the airport
Mini Banana MuffinEasy mini banana muffins are great for traveling. Bake them the night before, cool, and store in a zip top bag. As a bonus, these are a great way to use up those browning bananas before your trip! Bake them in a mini muffin pan and theyre the perfect size for kids and adults.Quinoa Bowls Three WaysMix cooked quinoa with a dollop of yogurt and a handful of berries and seeds and store in a mason jar. You can eat this quick meal while waiting for your flight and then reuse the jar for water. Be inspired by what you have in the refrigerator! This recipe would work well with steel cut oats, brown rice, or millet for a nice boost of whole grains.PB&J Protein BallsNeed a bit more protein in the morning before you start your air travel? Make these peanut butter and jelly protein balls with our Vanilla Protein Booster, Flaxseed Meal, Shredded Coconut, and Rolled Oats--youll be all set for long-haul flights (or long layover!) Sub in almond butter, cashew butter, or a different nut butter for a peanut-free option.Crispy Roasted Chickpeas/Garbanzo BeansFor a crunchy, savory bite try these Crispy Roasted Chickpeas! This recipe is made from canned chickpeas but you could also prepare your own from dried beans. These are a great alternative to chips and would still satisfy your need for *crunch*. I think these would be great with some garlic, smoked paprika, and a touch of cayenne. Quinoa Tortilla WrapsThese Quinoa Tortillas couldnt be any easier and are super kid friendly! You just need three ingredients: quinoa flour, water, and salt. Prep and cool a few the night before and make lunch wraps from your favorite fillings. I think butter lettuce, sliced turkey, and cheese would be tasty. You could also do a veggie wrap with hummus, salad mix, sliced bell pepper and cucumber.Popcorn Three WaysPop a batch of popcorn, separate each into a different plastic bag, and season away! This recipe has inspiration for a sweet cinnamon sugar combo, nutritional yeast and chives, or parmesan and parsley. Use your favorite flavor combination and keep fresh in plastic bags. Popcorn is a great snack that wont add any extra weight to your carry-on luggage as you start your travel day! Plus, everybody loves popcorn!Hemp Macaroon Bars with Dried Cherries and Dark ChocolateFor a decadent treat, try our Hemp Macaroon Bars. The combination of coconut, hemp, dried cherries and dark chocolate in this treat is just right to satisfy your sweet tooth. Prep these beforehand and store with parchment in between to prevent sticking.Sunflower CrackersYou know that afternoon lull where youre just craving something salty and crunchy? Reach for these Sunflower Crackers instead of that weird airplane snack pack! This recipe is easy to customize but I think the sunflower seeds would pair really well with sea salt and dried dill.Fresh VeggiesFor flying I like to bring veggies that dont create any waste/compost. Think snap peas, carrots, grapes, celery, pitted olives, cucumbers! Bananas, apples, and oranges are all great, but if youre on a long flight you might not want to balance a banana peel or pieces of orange peel in your lap until the attendant comes around with a garbage receptacle. Hard-Boiled EggsBoil and peel your eggs beforehand, sprinkle with a little salt, and be on your way! I love making crackers, wraps, and muffins - dont get me wrong, but hard-boiled eggs are my simple on-the-go food that is great for long flights. To make them easy to peel, cool the eggs in an ice bath for at least 5 minutes before peeling. Lastly, save your containers for reuse. After you eat your quinoa bowl, rinse out the mason jar and use it as your water bottle. You could also reuse your zip-top bags for purchasing some granola or trail mix out of a grocery stores bulk bins before your flight home. Whatever travel snacks you decide to bring, may you have safe and healthy travels this summer season!
