Line cupcake pan with liners or grease pan with butter and lightly dust with flour.
Melt butter and add eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla.
In another bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda, cocoa powder, sugar and salt and add flour mixture with milk to the butter mixture.
Fill cupcake cups 1/2 full.
Preheat oven at 350° F and bake for 15-17 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into cupcakes comes out clean.
Remove from oven and let cool for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack. Allow cupcakes to cool completely before frosting.
For the Frosting
Combine butter, sugar and salt and beat with electric mixer until blended. Add the milk, vanilla and confectioners’ sugar and beat for 5 minutes or until it reaches a smooth and creamy consistency.
To Assemble
Roll out ivory fondant to 1/8 inches thick on a surface lightly dusted with corn starch or confectioners’ sugar.
Using a cookie cutter or knife, cut circles in the fondant large enough to cover the surface of the cupcake. Use a knife to spread frosting on cooled cupcakes and immediately place fondant circle on top.
Use a toothpick or butter knife to form the 3 lines that make up the pug’s forehead wrinkles.
Roll out black fondant to 1/8 inches and cut a semi-circle to form the pug’s nose. Stick the black fondant directly on the cupcake using water as the glue.
Using the black fondant, roll out a triangular shape for the nose and stick this directly on top of the semi-circle shape. You may choose to use the toothpick to make holes at the bottom of the nose.
To make the eyes, roll 2 balls of black fondant and stick this to the cupcake with water. Roll 2 tiny balls of ivory fondant and stick this on top of the black eyes.
Roll 2 noodle-like shapes with the ivory fondant and stick these around the eyes. Roll 1 longer noodle-like shape and stick this around the nose section.
To make the ears, cut out 2 triangles and stick them to the cupcake with water. Fold the triangle inwards to make it look more natural.
To make the tongue, cut an oval shape in the pink fondant and use a toothpick to make an indent in the middle. Place the tongue on top of the black fondant, adhering with water.
