Hosting a St. Patricks Day Dinner Party

Hosting a St. Patricks Day Dinner Party

The leprechauns are coming! The leprechauns are coming! Just kidding. St. Patrick's Day, however, is coming and it makes for the perfect excuse to host a festive holiday dinner party. Bust out the green and gold Irish decor, stock up on Guinness, and cook up some traditional Irish eats. Then, invite your friends and/or family over, and celebrate the day leprechaun-style.

St. Patrick's Day Decor

Hosting a St. Patricks Day Dinner Party _ Bobs Red Mill While you might think that most St. Patty's Day decor is more fitting for an Irish pub, you can still decorate your space in a fun and festive way that honors the Irish, while remaining classy and tasteful. Or, you can skip classy and tasteful altogether and resign yourself to your home looking like a pub for a few hours. Just have fun with it. Either way you go, think green, think gold, think leprechauns, and think shamrocks. And maybe some horseshoes thrown in for good measure. One idea for table decor is to use indoor grass as a table runner, then scatter it with silver and gold coins. You can also place cute little candles in a line down the middle, and voila! You've got an inexpensive--yet tasteful and cheerful--splash of St. Patrick's Day flavor without going overboard. If you want a more elegant layout, go for lots of gold and metallic and choose muted blends of green as accent colors. You don't even have to use anything with shamrocks or horseshoes on it unless you want to. If you are a St. Patricks Day fanatic and think no celebration is worthwhile without lucky four-leaf clovers and horseshoes, you can fashion pretty green linen napkins into cute accent pieces and use horseshoe and clover-shaped bowls for finger foods. Really, when it comes to St. Patricks Day, as long as green and gold is part of the color scheme, only your creativity is the limit.

St. Patrick's Day Appetizers

Obviously, for appetizers, you'll want to stick with the color of the day and set out foods in hues of green if you can. Spinach dip makes for a great St. Patty's Day appetizer, and so does guacamole. You can serve either of these goodies in little mini tostada cups, or with fresh veggies cut into fun shapes for dipping. Another great idea is to have a mini bar station loaded with coffee, Irish cream, and Irish whiskey.Get creative and provide fun toppings like whipped cream and green and gold sanding sugar. Dont forget that presentation is everything. You can set out fun little disposable cups that you've decorated yourself or bust out the green and gold china. Your call, just have fun with it.

St. Patrick's Day Music

There's no party if there's no music. Music tastes can run the gamut, but if you want to make sure your background noise matches the occasion, simply create a special St. Pattys Day party playlist on Spotify or YouTube. Think of bands like the Dubliners, Flogging Molly, the Cranberries, and Dropkick Murphy's. If none of those are quite your thing, there are beautiful Celtic music compilations, as well as Irish ballad and folk songs like "Danny Boy" and the "Unicorn Song." If you're still feeling stuck, just go to YouTube and type in St. Patrick's Day compilations. Easy, and perfect to help set the mood of your gathering.

St. Patrick's Day Activities

There are so many different activities and games that can be given a twist to fit St. Patty's Day. Card games (especially card drinking games) can be a big winner, or St. Patricks Day-themed charades. You could even throw a dress-up party so that everyone comes in a costume. Have a contest at the end of the night as to who makes the best leprechaun, and the winner gets a cool prize. You could also set up a bar station and have a contest for who makes the best St. Patrick's Day drink. Alternatively, you can give it a twist, and whoever makes the worst drink has to complete a dare, chosen by the host or hostess. There are so many different ways you can go when throwing a St. Patricks Day dinner party, but ultimately the goal is to have fun. Also, do your best not to turn green by the end of the night. Remember that only those with the luck of the Irish survive the night still standing!
