Sourdough Starter

Details

In early California, sourdough was as much a part of the Goldrush of 1849 as gold itself. Traveling throughout the West in the packs of miners and settlers, it eventually found its home in San Francisco. The air in the Golden Gate region enhanced the bread made there with a wonderfully distinct taste. San Francisco has become world renowned for sourdough bread. In the United States, and even in areas around the world, San Francisco sourdough is regarded as the benchmark by which all other sourdough breads are judged.

Goldrush has removed the mystery of creating time honored sourdough! Buy this sourdough starter to easily create the tangy flavor and hearty aroma of sourdough bread anywhere in the world! Goldrush Sourdough Starter is naturally produced with only "wild yeast" and no fillers or preservatives. Works well in bread machines, too. Easy-to-follow instructions are included.

It couldn't have gone better. Everything I expected in a real sourdough bread. As a professional baker, this fit the picture perfectly.

I had no idea what I was getting myself into. It's quite an ordeal to make sour dough bread. I have a new found appreciation for the cost. It take 7 days, stirring and dipping and taking a cup out and putting a 1/2 cup of fresh flour and water back in. It's not for me, but the Red Mill Starter worked well.

I bought this batch for my son in law to try. Our started was good, but it does take practice. Unfortunately it no longer seems to be active (not the fault of the starter) and we are going to have start over.

My Mother always had sourdough starter and made wonderful baked goods. I have been unable to locate any one with a starter that I could use. So seeing this on your web site really excited me to the point of ordering extras to share as stocking stuffers for Christmas. I have never been disappointed with any thing from Bob's Red Mill so think I am ahead of the game with this purchase!!!

Can this starter be used in a bread maker and what adjustments should be made if any?
A shopper on Feb 20, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Hi! This isn't something we've tested but if you do, please let us know your results! It would be dependent on your bread machine and its ability to customize rise time as this time can vary with each sourdough culture.
My recipe says 2 cups of sour dough starter. How many packages should I buy?
A shopper on Feb 1, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Hi! You just need to purchase one package of sourdough starter. The starter will need to be fed and proofed for around 60-72 hours before it's ready for use in your recipe. You can find the detailed instructions here: https://www.bobsredmill.com/recipes/how-to-make/directions-goldrush-sourdough-starter/
Can your sourdough starter be used to make gluten free sourdough bread?
A shopper on Oct 18, 2017
BEST ANSWER: No, this product contains gluten and cannot be used to make a gluten free sourdough.
Is this gluten free?
Pat u on Oct 16, 2017
BEST ANSWER: No, this product contains wheat flour and is not gluten free.
