"Groat" is a term that comes from an old Scottish word describing an oat kernel with the hull removed. Our Organic Oat Groats have a hearty, chewy texture that is great for rustic pilafs, salads, stews, and hot cereal. For fresh organic oat flour, grind organic oat groats on your home mill.

Details

"Groat" is an old Scottish word from hundreds of years ago that refers to cereal made from whole, hull-less oats. Our Organic Whole Oat Groats take a bit longer to prepare than cut or rolled oats, but the exceptionally hearty flavor and chewy subtlety of this wholesome porridge make it well worth the wait. Oat groats are also an excellent addition to your lunch or dinner menu. Use oat groats in place of rice for a hearty pilaf or in a cold grain salad.

Scores of studies have documented the many health benefits of oats. The FDA says that diets low in saturated fat and cholesterol and rich in fruits, vegetables, and grain products like oats that contain of dietary fiber, particularly soluble fiber, may reduce the risk of heart disease. Oats help you feel fuller longer, which helps control your weight. Oats may also help reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes, since their soluble fiber helps control blood sugar. Oats are higher in protein and healthy fats, and lower in carbohydrates than most other whole grains. They contain more soluble fiber than any other grain. They also have the best amino acid balance of all the cereal grains.

Start your day the heart-healthy way with a rich bowl of Bob's Red Mill Organic Whole Grain Oat Groats. They also make a great side dish for dinner. Try the tasty and filling Oat Groats Pilaf recipe on the back of our package. Use your home mill to grind groats into fresh oat flour.

Make oats in a rice cooker
Did you know you can make oats in the rice cooker and eat it like rice? :D I've been trying to get my hubby and parents to switch from white rice to brown rice to eat healthier. But they're stubbornly resisting. We're an Asian family and eat Asian meals regularly (rice with sides where rice is the constant). Hubby eats granola but my parents don't "get" granola or oatmeal. So the only way I was going to incorporate oats into their meals regularly is if I can make oats act like rice. On a whim, I tried cooking oat groats like brown rice. And it was yummy! Nice and fluffy, aromatic, not mushy as you might imagine because I was associating oats with oatmeal. I wasn't sure what to expect but what a pleasant surprise! I never knew. Had a nice snap to each grain but not chewy. Smelled and tasted so nutritious. Hubby loved it! Said he would eat oats instead of brown rice. Done! I have also tried cooking a combination of half oats/half brown rice. That was nice too. Hubby liked it as well :) Now on to converting my parents...

I made whole oat groats in my Zojirushi rice cooker on the brown rice setting following the same water lines as you would brown rice. It's just too bad that whole oat groats aren't easily available at local stores. But just imagine, I can make "fried rice" oats, bibimbap oats, practically anything rice can? Oh, to be excited about something so simple. Lol
Cook and eat oat groats like you would brown rice. Wonderful!

Love Bob's Red Mill Organic Oat Groats
I love oatmeal and recently began using Bob's Red Mill Oat Groats. My husband always ate cold cereal and I suggested he try the oat groats. He only eats oat groats now and says he stays full all morning long with a hearty bowl of this great cereal.

Great Product, Quick Shipping
I am enjoying my Organic Oat Groats, which I simply soak in water in the 'fridge for a day or two, allowing the groats to soften up, without cooking them or degrading their nutritional content by heating/cooking. I just add True Ceylon cinnamon, and sometimes pair with a sweet potato and/or avocado. This is part of my breakfast, lunch, or dinner daily, so I go through a lot of these oats. Fantastic product for this vegan!

This is good organic oat groat. It's better than the groat we got from Whole Foods. But it's not as creamy or tasty as the organic oat groat we bought from the Korean grocery store, Super G.

Love the texture and flavor of oat groats.

Best way to get your oats. Excellent chewy texture. Since the grain has not been broken open for milling, all the nutrition that oats offer is in your bowl. We mill the groats to make oat flour for recipes. And Organic too.

I chose this variety of Bob's oats because they are organic, and have the least (any?) processing you can buy. Consistently a high-quality product. Thanks Bob!

While oat groats take a bit longer to prepare, in my opinion, the flavor and consistency are superior to the more processed oat cereal variations.

Andrew R on Jan 13, 2018
These are my go-to breakfast food -- I cook up a big batch and freeze individual servings -- they reheat beautifully in the microwave for a hearty healthy breakfast in the same amount of time it would take me to make "quick" oats -- but with so much more flavor, texture, and fiber. Reheat with fresh or frozen fruit and walnuts -- delicious!
Gail S on Jan 10, 2018

Where are the oats grown? Are they from the US? Thanks.
A shopper on Nov 3, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The oats are from the US and Canada.
What are groats ?
A shopper on Mar 13, 2018
BEST ANSWER: A "groat" refers to the whole oat grain/kernel with the hull removed.
Can I add this to my granola and is it the same as the oats in common granola?
A shopper on Mar 5, 2018
BEST ANSWER: No, these are whole grain oat groats and would not have the same texture as rolled oats in granola. For that recipe I would recommend our Old Fashioned Rolled Oats or Thick Rolled Oats.
What are you manufacturing practices as far as peanut items are concerned? Do you produce any peanut items? If yes, are they in the same factory as your whole grain oats and do you use dedicated lines or do you share lines?
A shopper on Jan 6, 2018
BEST ANSWER: We are a completely peanut free facility.
Are these groats heated at all? Thanks
A shopper on Oct 23, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes, our oat groats are stabilized in a dry kiln at 200°F to make them shelf stable.
are oat groats gluten free?
A shopper on Oct 20, 2017
BEST ANSWER: While oat groats are naturally free from gluten, we do not package them in our gluten free facility or test them for gluten. Oats are prone to gluten contact during growing and harvesting, so we would not recommend them for someone on a gluten free diet.
