World’s Best Porridge

After our last post, we got many requests for the actual winning recipe. While it’s pretty much what’s on our package, I’m happy to include it here for your enjoyment.

Basic Steel Cut Oats

2-1/2 cups Water
1/4 tsp Salt
1 cup Bob’s Red Mill Steel Cut Oats (Organic, Gluten Free, or Regular)

In a medium saucepan, bring water and salt to a boil. Add steel cut oats and reduce heat to low. Stir frequently and cook for 20-30 minutes, depending on how chewy you like your oats. If the oats begin to look too dry, add 1/4 to 1/2 cup of water. Top oats with milk and brown sugar and enjoy!

To eat them in the true Scottish style, use 1 cup of milk in place of 1 cup water during cooking. When done, do not top with anything. The Scots, as we were told, are made of tougher stuff and do not need fancy toppings for their oats.

Congrats on winning the contest. I’ll try your oats & your recipe. I currently use the oats in the can from Scotland but reduce the water to 3 cups for 1 cup of oats and cook for 20-25 minutes rarely stirring. I’ll try your 2.5 cups of water and see. I like chewy porridge. I top mine with flax seed meal, which I stir in, then I stir in some frozen blueberries, which thaws them, and then pour calcium-fortified soy milk over it all. It is soooooo good.

Oops, I also meant to say great news on Bob giving the company to the employees! What a wonderful thing to do. And yes, employees really do build the company. But how rare it is for an employer to acknowledge that fact. Good man, I’ve bought many Red Mill products in the past, but I’ll choose yours first from now on.
