If Bobs does contain SMS what is it made of? Does your yeast or baking soda contain or is derived from soy, soy oil or soy lecithin. I have a very severe reaction to soy and I am trying to figure out my new allergy. Thank you
Our Baking Soda does not contain monostearate, it is pure sodium bicarbonate. Our Active Dry Yeast does contain sorbitan monostearate. Sorbitan monostearate acts as an emulsifier and protectant by reducing the occurrence of oxidation and excess drying. As an emulsifier, Sorbitan monostearate will further assist with rehydration of the yeast by attracting water. It is derived from palm oil.
Is your yeast GMO?
Thank you for your question!
All our products, including our Active Dry Yeast, are non-GMO and are sourced from non-GMO ingredients. Bob's Red Mill has always made a commitment to source only non-GMO products.
While this product is non-GMO, it is not able to be Non-GMO Project Verified due to prohibitively heightened regulatory structure and/or because our supplier’s manufacturing information is deemed proprietary such that it cannot be shared with the Non-GMO Project.
However, while this product is technically “unverified” by the Non-GMO Project, we continue to follow our internal food safety and quality programs of sourcing only non-GMO ingredients:
Our vendors are required to provide annual documentation that the ingredients they sell to Bob’s Red Mill are made without the use of modern biotechnology. The Food Safety and Quality team audits and verifies this documentation on an annual basisOur facility operates under strict Food Safety programs and Good Manufacturing Practices to ensure the integrity of our products is maintained and in compliance with U.S. Food Laws.

Very helpful. But the word I was looking for is totally missing: organic.
I am familiar with your company and trust it. I actually read the entire article and got many needed answers as I am just embarking on making yeast breads with my new Hitachi bread making machine.
Is there organic yeast?
I appreciate your explaining what sorbitan monostearate is, if it is produced from non-organic sources, I am afraid of it. Can you address this and help me make a decision about what to use. Thank you do much.
Make your own organic yeast by creating a sourdough mother from all organic ingredients.
Hi Rae! Please email Customer Service at customerservice@bobsredmill.com.
A great article.
My question: Is baking yeast available without SMS?
Despite a very controlled diet, I had suffered for years until I removed stearates, stearic acid and vegetable lubricants, which were ubiquitous in many supplements I was consuming. Relief to my GI Track was quick and for years I now avoid all such possible toxins that were previously believed to be safe.
Hi Louise! Please contact customerservice@bobsredmill.com for more info.
Is the stearate used in sorbitan monostearate, in the baking yeast from Bob's Red Mill, vegan?
Thank you.
Hi Lauren, please email customerservice@bobsredmill.com for assistance.
Hi- I see that someone else asked this, but I am looking for a yeast that is confirmed as vegan. The section above was somewhat unclear on if Bob's yeast products are vegan. Is Bob's Red Mill Active Dry Yeast vegan friendly? Is the stearic acid sourced from an animal or vegan friendly source? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.
