After many bags of old fashion, steel cut, fast cooking oats, I bought a bag of protein oats (doesn't seem they sell the organic here). I make overnight oats or protein shake with oats for breakfast. Usually I get one, literally, one hull per serving, which is more than manageable. I've decided to use the protein ones for the overnight or eventually stove top oats, bought regular old fashion for my shake as they are softer and make for a better consistency. Congratulations on such good products overall, I'm a loyal user and the protein oats are no exception now
We don't have a Steel Cut version of our Protein Oats currently, but we appreciate the suggestion!
I love these oats & eat them every single day as overnight oats. Period. Full stop. I've never been bothered by hulls - if there are some, seems like that's natural and even extra fiber. How about people just chew their food more, which helps digestion process, and get on with it. I think that these Protein Oats are a real service to the market, and I've found nothing comparable. I recommend to all my midlife women coaching clients. Thank you, BRM!!!
I don't usually comment but there was so much hate! I just tried them for the first time and am OBSESSED the best oatmeal I've ever had in the US, I have been searching for oatmeal that tastes like the kind they sell in Finland and this is definitely the closest one! I got maybe one hull that I felt like should get spit out but otherwise I loved the texture and flavor!
Ah, I appreciate your comment. I have been considering trying these and now I definitely will! I had the opportunity to visit Finland in the spring and loved the oats there so much I took the rolled oats I wasn't able to finish back home on the plane with me, cherishing them until they ran out. If these are anything like those I will be so excited:)
How much phosphorus is in the protein oats? I am tracking the amount for a renal diet.
Thank you for your question! Phosphorus content is not something that we have our products analyzed for, so this is not information that we would be able to provide. We have each of our products analyzed through a 3rd party laboratory and phosphorus content is not something that they have quantified. This does not mean our products don’t contain phosphorus or other nutrients not listed, just that we don’t have tested quantities available for the amounts.
There were so many negative reviews that I HAD to write a review on these!!
I absolutely love love these protein oats!! I make savory protein porridge and it is easily one of my favorite meals! I've never had any issues with hulls but its probably because i cook the crap out of them :)
If anybody wants the recipe (340 calories 37.5g protein, without toppings)
1. 40g protein oats
2. 1 cup chicken bone broth + 1/2 cup water
3. 1 tsp of dashi powder
4. 200g egg whites
5. dash of soy sauce or other toppings
Cook 1,2,&3 until cooked all the way (around 10-15 mins)
Add 4. and quickly and vigorously stir until the eggs are completely cooked and it looked like porridge.
Add a dash of soy sauce, chili oil, fried shallots etc and enjoy!!
This is my second bag of protein oats. I like the extra protein they provide, but there are excessive hulls in every bag. This morning i sifted through one cup of oats dry and pulled out about twenty hulls. Now that im eating my breakfast I've had to pull another 4 out of my mouth. I think you'd be better off warning your customers about the hulls rather than saying protein oats don't have any. They're good, but definitely kind of a hassle. It would be great if you could address the problem.
We have shared feedback about the hulls in these oats with our Quality Assurance team, and it is something that they are working to address. We're happy to offer more assistance if needed, and you can reach out to us directly at customerservice@bobsredmill.com. Thank you!
I wish I had seen previous comments before I bought these oats. I never thought I'd be SO disappointed in a BRM product, but needing to continually spit out hulls makes for a ruined breakfast. Every bite had hulls in it. Don't bother to reply with your cut/paste response about agriculture and natural grain products. I've never had this problem with ANY other oats. EVER. No way should anyone bake with these, either. No one wants to have a mouthful of hulls in their cookie.
I'm taking these back to the store. Total fail, BRM. Absolutely total fail.
No hulls in my experience. Made the best protein granola I've ever had. Been through 4 lbs so far.
Hello, and thank you for your feedback. We apologize that you had this experience, and while it's true that hulls can sometimes be present, we are sorry that the amount in your bag was excessive, and this is not the experience we want our customers to have. Love the idea of this product but unfortunately the bag I purchased was full of hulls and inedible - I’m talking 10-20 hulls per small spoonful. Perhaps it’s a fluke but a brand that used to have my trust has lost it.
We apologize for the recent experience with our Protein Oats! This variety of oats does shed the hulls naturally. However, oats are a natural agricultural product, and the texture and consistency of the oat can vary slightly from crop to crop, sometimes with more husks, hulls, or seeds being present. Variances can also occur depending on the growing season of the crop. We have process controls and product inspection procedures in place to exclude as much of these materials as possible, but they often cannot be completely eliminated based on the technology used in the manufacturing process. We do apologize there were so many hulls and we’re happy to assist further; you can reach us at customerservice@bobsredmill.com.
I’m on my second bag of Protein Oats, and I absolutely love the taste and consistency of these! And the added benefit of the extra protein! I usually pull out a hull during every bowl, but it’s worth it!
I just bought a bag of protein oats, and made them for the first time this morning (in the microwave, but with some dried cranberries tossed in before cooking to break the surface tension! They didn't boil over, but I didn't realize I needed extra liquid and they were a bit dry - I'll have to play with that a bit.) My question pertains to the statement in this article about them being hull-less. I found the article because while eating them I was surprised how many hulls I found compared to other brands of conventional rolled oats, and a google search led me here. The article states the oats shed their hulls themselves - is there a quality control step in their production to sift out any remaining hulls that don't get shed? Or are regular oats being mixed in? Did I just get a bad bag? If the amount of hulls I found were standard, I may not purchase these again because it was honestly quite annoying to keep finding them in my mouth.
Same experience. I have eaten about 5 cups of these oats so far and every single spoonful has had a few hulls. I have had to pick some hulls out of my teeth hours later. Previous reviews before the past month or so do not seem to have this problem, so hopefully it is a bad batch and a mistake was made. It is a shame because I purchased 8lbs at once and do not want to eat the rest.

A follow up to dove’s comment and your answer. If the High protein oats are Non-GMO, and are indeed created with traditional plant breeding methods. why is there no labeling showing Non-GMO on the packaging?
Thank you for your question! Our Protein Oats are Non-GMO Project verified and the Non-GMO Project stamp may be on the back of the package. You can see the front and back here: https://www.bobsredmill.com/product/protein-oats
You note that traditional oats are heated and steamed and then rolled out. Does that mean protein oats are not heated and steamed? Does that pose any issue with eating raw protein oats or increase risks of spoilage? Thank you!
Thank you for your question! Our Protein Oats still go through a heating process as raw oats go rancid very quickly; the heating process is a little different from our other oats, though. A dry heat process is used to evaporate excess moisture. This also causes a browning reaction that helps give the oats their nutty flavor and a slight caramel color.
Hello, one serving of cooked oats (about 1/2 cup dry) is typically around 1 cup cooked.
Hi, This web article ("How Do Bobs Red Mill Protein Oats Compare to Regular Oats?") has a typo that is repeated, and a third typo . It says 910 grams instead of 10. ("regular rolled oats 6 grams vs. Protein Oats, 910 grams") & ("something extra: 910 grams of plant-based protein per serving,") & ("Non-GMO Project Verified variety that is 5060% higher in protein*" ) Also there are a lot of spaces missing in between words.
I'm sure you guys are super busy but I just wanted to let you know. Also Thank you for posting this article about the oats. It was the information I was looking for.
:)
Please tell me why the "Protein Oats" require extra cooking and extra liquid? I boiled them in water 15 minutes yesterday according to the directions on the package. Today I boiled them in almond milk, just 2:1 (forgot to look at the instructions), and they soaked up all the milk quickly, so they were more chewy.
Could you explain why there is 1 gram of sugar in these protein oats when there.is none in the regular old fashioned oats? I know it is not added suger so curious where this is coming from.
Hi Shelly, The sugar in some of our oats comes from the naturally occurring sugars found in the oats themselves. Oats, like many grains, contain small amounts of natural sugars, which can show up on the nutrition label even when no sugar has been added during processing. This is typical for whole grains and does not indicate added sugars. Oats are primarily composed of complex carbohydrates, fiber, proteins, and a small amount of fat. Among these complex carbohydrates, there are naturally occurring sugars like glucose, fructose, and sucrose, though in very small amounts. Sugar content is also rounded so if the amount is greater than .5 grams it’s rounded to 1 gram but if it is less than .5 grams it is rounded to zero; oats with “0g” sugar likely still have small amounts that are less than .5 grams.
Hi Lori, we don’t have information on the amino acid profiles for our oats as this is not something we have evaluated. We apologize for the inconvenience!
Hi Emily! For rolled oats, the groats are rolled flat, and for steel cut, they're cut in 2-3 pieces instead. In addition to the shape of the oats, our Protein Oats are grown from a special variety that is higher in protein than our other oats.
So interested in the Protein Oats. Is the protein listed in the label “after cooking” or before? I was wondering if the extra protein came from not heating and steaming the oats.
Hi Jim! All of our nutritional info reflects the food in the packaging, uncooked.
So does the cooking process change the nutritional profile of the oats as listed on the package?
Hi Tina! The nutritional profile of the oats remains the same, but if you add extra toppings or ingredients, that will affect the final nutrients.
I'm curious if their is any thought/interest in creating a sprouted variant of this product. My understanding is that sprouting creates a better nutrient profile (higher fiber/protein).
Hi Lance! We'll pass this forward to our decision makers. :)
I am concerned regarding your protein oats when you say 'unique hull-less cultivar oat'. How is it so? Is it a GMO oat? How did you find a new oat? I am a licensed health/life coach and am always very skeptical when a company that I trust and respect, like Bob's goes and creates a new type of grain, seed, plant, etc. when mother earth obviously didn't all of a sudden create something new so is it man made?
Thank you for clarifying.
Hi Dove! Our Protein Oats were developed using conventional plant breeding techniques. As a general rule, conventional breeding develops new plant varieties by the process of selection, and seeks to achieve expression of genetic material which is already present within a species. This is different from genetic modification, which works primarily through insertion of genetic material, including material from other species or life forms.
I LOVE THESE OATS!!!! So amazing to have a little added protein in my breakfast. I've never had a hull and I cook them really well. Delicious. I've bought like 10 bags already
