Instructions
  1. Combine all ingredients except TVP in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Boil for 5 minutes to help rehydrate the spices and blend flavors.
  2. In a heatproof bowl, pour the boiling broth mixture over the TVP and stir to combine. Cover and let stand for 10 minutes.
Recipe Notes

This mixture makes great breakfast tacos when mixed with a little salsa, or you can enjoy it as we do in a skillet with homestyle potatoes, diced onions and green peppers, and salsa.

Family of 4 surveyed after trying this recipe: unanimous vote to leave out the syrup!
    Otherwise, quite tasty.

I agree with the decision to leave out the syrup, or at least reduce it by quite a lot. I also added some tomato paste while it was still hot and it melted in nicely.

Rather bland as listed. 3/5 stars.
For a 5/5 convincing sausage substitute, modify:
    No maple syrup
    3-4 Tbsp Olive oil
2-3 Tbsp Tamari (or soy sauce if not gluten free)
    1/2 tsp Garlic granules
    1/2 tsp Fennel seeds
    Tastes amazing!
