Ugh. I LOVED the old recipe. It wasn’t difficult to follow those instructions!! AND the mix made an entire 9×13 pan of brownies. Now these ones are smaller. Way to charge the same price, but reduce the volume of your product. I will not be buying these again.

I apologize that you do not prefer our newly reformulated Gluten Free Brownie Mix. Based on feedback from our customers, we’ve updated this recipe. It was never our intention to reduce the yield of our mix. I have logged your concern for review.

Has anyone tried replacing the eggs with the Ener-G egg replacer? Would be curious to know if that would work as well. My son has so many food allergies, it’s so hard to make him a baked dessert. Thanks!

To prepare our reformulated Gluten Free Brownie Mix with an egg replacer, we found the following method to work the best.

Combine ½ cup pureed silken tofu and ¼ cup water. Add the tofu mixture to the contents of a 21oz/595g package of GF Brownie Mix and mix until well combined, about 3 minutes. Evenly spread mixture into a well-oiled 9×9-inch square pan and bake at 325F (160C) until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, about 45 – 60 minutes.

I have to say when I purchased the *new version* of the brownie mix I was surprised to see that you changed the recipe instructions. The previous instructions were not difficult to follow but the new ones were simplified. However after making the brownies we were greatly disappointed by the taste and texture of the brownies. You can definitely tell the difference. We loved the old recipe. And hope you bring it back. I wonder if making the new recipe the same way as the old would make it taste the way they use too? For now we will go back to trying other brands till we find one we like as much as the old Bob’s Red Mill Brownies.

Really miss the old product…following new instructions this yielded a tough, gritty, excessively sweet product that doesn’t come close to the reliable results. I would not serve these to a guest…with the old formula I could serve to guests who were not “gluten free” and they loved them. Please bring back old formula…or tell us how to achieve same results with new formula.

Sadly, I’ve got to agree with the other reviews. I generally use the mix to make 2 bite brownies. Today’s batch with the new mix is a complete waste. They’ve cooled into little rocks. I did taste one while it was warm, and it was not near as rich and fudge-like as before. I constantly rave about this mix, fool non-gluten-free people into not knowing what they’re eating, and am so disappointed right now. Your new and improved is not improved. =(

We absolutely loved your “classic” brownie mix! Made us feel like we weren’t missing anything by going gf! I was about to make a batch for my children’s open house at school when I realized the pkg I had purchased was not the “classic” mix. After reading the reviews, I’ve decided not to waste my time. Will return this pkg to store and bake another gf treat instead. So sad!!

I am extremely disappointed that you changed your brownie mix and recipe. We have been making those brownies for years and they are my daughter’s favorite dessert. The new brownies were a disaster, as we also are egg free, and it doesn’t hold up with any of our current egg replacers. We would REALLY love for you to bring back the old mix! It was our go-to treat for all occasions, including every birthday “cake” for years! If you don’t bring it back, I’d love to know if we can get a list of ingredients and their quantities from the old mix. It was so good!

Please, release the classic old recipe as an alternative. Way too much sugar on this one and horrible dry texture. Don’t like it

I could not be more disappointed. The brownie mix was my go to dessert. I would even “veganize” the recipe to accommodate all my friend’s dietary restrictions. It was always a hit. Always! I’ve been serving these for years. People ask for them.

Last night I tried making the new mix following the old instructions AND instructions as written. Both batches turned out terrible. The first was runny and spongy. The 2nd was hard, dry, and made half the quantity of the original. Sorry, Bob’s. You got this one wrong. I won’t be buying again. BRING BACK THE OLD RECIPE!!!! Please please please.

Deeply disappointed in the new mix. Your original formula was amazing, so much so that we would not hesitate to bring a batch along to house parties. Everyone loved them! Why in the world did you change?

I am so sad about this new mix. The old version was amazing and I have no idea why they would think to change it. The new mix with the new instructions were not edible, and I made two batches just to make sure it wasn’t user error. Please please please bring back the old recipe and instructions!

I recently tried the gluten free brownie mix for the first time and I absolutely love it! Even my boyfriend thinks they’re the best brownies ever. I’ve tried every grocery store variety in the past and I’ve always been disappointed. They never came out as moist and delicious as these, and they’re not too sweet. I use the ingredients as noted on the package, completely melting the butter in the microwave and beating the eggs a bit before adding to the mixture. I use an 8×8 pan, baking at 325 degrees for 48 minutes for perfectly moist, melt in your mouth brownies. Absolutely love! They’re a weekly staple in our house, please don’t ever change! Thank you.

First time buyer, long time Bob’s Red Mill lover. I will not try these again! 384 grams of sugar in the package of mix?! That means the mix is roughly 85% sugar! The brownies were cloyingly sweet and I could not even feed them to coworkers. I’ll stick to any other Bob’s Red Mill product. Disappointing purchase.

I used this brownie mix to bring to a work party. I needed 2 packages to make a 13×9 pan. To make it gluten and dairy free, I didn’t use butter. Instead, I substituted with applesauce (3/4 cup), coconut oil (1/4 cup) and a drizzle of canola oil for texture. The brownies came out light and fluffy with just the right amount of sweetness. All my coworkers loved them – in fact, most were not aware they were gluten or dairy free and I still had several requests for the recipe.

I can’t imagine why you felt the need to change your brownie mix! The old mix was amazing. I made it all the time for “normal” people and never had to admit it was gluten free. That’s what I’m doing this morning but now I have to come up with some other dish to take at the LAST MINUTE because you decided to fix something that definitely wasn’t broken.
The mix doesn’t make as much. It doesn’t turn out the same. I wish I had a case of the old mix stashed away somewhere. This is extremely disappointing. PLEASE BRING BACK THE OLD VERSION

Bring back the “Classic” formula!! I really don’t like the way this new formula turns out, plus, it’s a smaller batch. The old formula was thick and fudgy with excellent moist texture. These have a hard crust on top and are way too sweet. You went wrong on this one. I used to be able to say it was the best brownie mix ever. Not so much anymore. Guess I’ll have to start making them from scratch since I don’t like the other store bought brownie mixes either.

The rating seems pretty clear. This new formulated recipe does not even compare to the classic formulation. We have been a very loyal customer for many years, over 1,000 batches. With the new formula, we can no longer use the vegan substitutes and special additions we made to make these brownies taste extraordinary. Also, as someone stated, we end up with a small yield of brownies. Very disappointed. Also, when I visited your website there was a separate page for this brownie mix and the rating gave it about 4.5 stars, but this page gives it a star rating of 2.5, whats up with that?

WOW, I read all these comments and still tried to make a batch of the new “formula” mix. WORST IDEA EVER. I should have just trashed it. I usually make an egg-free cupcake for every one of the special occasions. This new mix didn’t have the egg-free recipe on the bag (so I looked it up on here), it didn’t cook properly, then it fused itself to the cupcake liners. I even attempted to scrape the oily chocolatey goo from the center and eat it. Way too oily and gooey, makes a decent fudge if your willing to throw away the half of it that just burns to the pan. WASTE OF MONEY. Please bring back the old formula.

Considering the large number of negative comments about your new brownie mix formulation, are you all considering returning to the earlier version. I have enjoyed these brownies but I find that they tend to dry out rather quickly. Thank you.

Instead of using a bag, I used the bulk version and measured out 21 oz. Not sure if they’re the same. But even if they’re not, the brownies are still delicious. Much tastier than the store bought treats in my opinion. I wonder what the nutrition would be? How many vitamins, minerals, calories, sugars, those kinds of things would be in it.

I am adding my name to the list of people unhappy with this newer version. I bought 6 bags of these not knowing it wasn’t the “classic” version 🙁 I can not return them without a receipt, which I didn’t think I would need to save. I used to be able to make these for the whole family and they wouldn’t know it was GF.
They are harder, drier, and way to sweet. Are you changing other mixes that we should know about?

I LOVED the old recipe that was gluten and dairy free and only required 1 egg that could be substituted with great results. They were delicious!! I served this for many occasions with rave reviews and no one even knew they were allergy friendly until I told them. I am very disappointed that you changed the recipe and will now have to find another brand.

I am preparing two batches for a gluten-free alternative at a 4-H fund-raiser. Have always found them to be very good, but am concerned having read the above reviews. I hope my time and effort will not be wasted. What quantity chocolate chips can I add to each batch without compromising the texture?

      Hi Lorene,
If you’d like to add chocolate chips, we suggest adding up to 1 cup of semi sweet or similar. We hope that you enjoy them!

Our local stores are getting better at carrying GF products and yesterday was the first time I saw this brownie mix. I wasn’t happy with the amount of sugar in it but I’ve been searching for a brownie mix that is husband approved. After reading the reviews here, I decided to add GF chocolate pudding, an extra egg and 1/2 cup of grape seed oil. I poured the brownies in a 8×8 pan since we like our brownies cake-like and baked them at 325 for 45 minutes. The brownies came out thick, moist and do not have a grainy texture. My husband, who is NOT GF by the way, gave two thumbs up and even went back for seconds. So while this is a nice treat mix, I’m on the fence on buying it again because of the amount of sugar and having to add extra ingredients.
