Brian's Healthy Breakfast of Porridge and Fruit

Contender for the 2012 Spar for the Spurtle. This recipe was not tested by Bob’s Red Mill.

  • 2 cups Water
  • 1/2 cup Steel Cut Oats
  • 2 Tbsp Brian's Gruel Mix *
  • 1 Tbsp 10 Grain Hot Cereal (heaping amount)
  • 1 Banana sliced
  • 1/2 cup Blueberries (or another fresh fruit in season)
  • 2 Tbsp Walnut Halves heaping amount, Pecans, Hazelnuts or a blend of all three

Directions

Step 1

Place water in a small saucepan. Add Brian's Gruel Mix and bring to a boil. Add the Steel Cut Oats, reduce heat to low, cover and cook for 5 minutes. During this time place half of the sliced banana and half the blueberries in each bowl.

Step 2

After the porridge boils for 5 minutes, add the 10 grain cereal and stir until blended with the oats. Cover and cook for an additional 12 - 15 minutes (until it reaches the consistency you prefer). Stir occasionally.

Step 3

When porridge is done, spoon a half-portion into each fruit-filled cereal bowl, sprinkle the nuts on top, add milk and enjoy.

Serves 2.

Notes

*Brian's Gruel Mix is equal portions, Quinoa, Roasted Buckwheat (Kasha), Millet and Amaranth.
