Fiber
and Fast Foods
Easy
to prepare foods and snack bars are convenient for a fast
paced life, however they do not offer the fiber our bodies
need. This is because most eat-on-the-go packaged foods
are made with re-fined flours and other highly processed
ingredients. In the article "Missing Ingredient In American
Diet," (The Wall Street Journal, October 22, 2003) states
how new studies have begun to show just how important fiber
is in our diets, and that we need about 25 grams of fiber
a day. Most Americans only consume half of this recommendation
on a daily basis. Although fiber provides no nutrients by
itself, it has many benefits for our bodies. Insoluble fiber
(wheat bran, and some fruits and vegetables) greatly benefits
the digestive tract by helping to push along other waste.
And soluble fiber (fiber that dissolves in water) helps
prevent cholesterol from being absorbed into the blood stream.
To increase our fiber content we should include more whole
grains as well as high-fiber fruits and vegetables back
into our diets. The convenient products available to us
now are just not the best for our health in the long run.
