The long anticipated sequel to our Mill family Baking Book, the Bob’s Red Mill Cookbook has finally hit store shelves. We’ve slaved over recipes and proofreading for the last two years and are happy to be releasing a new book filled with recipes geared toward whole grain cooking. Recipes were gathered from our recipe files, from chefs who have taught at our cooking school, and some were developed right here by our culinary specialists  Chelsea Lincoln and Lori Sobelson just for this book.

I love baking, but what makes me truly enthusiastic about getting into my kitchen (and cleaning the mess that’s left from my last project) is cooking with whole grains. I’ve been excited for this book since I first looked at the recipe list and have already tried a few at home.  Each has been spectacular. I am confident that this book will be a great addition to any cook’s collection.

Something that I really like about this book is the eclectic collection of different recipes from around the world; recipes such as Gazpacho Bulgur Salad and African Peanut Stew. It also contains many recipes that have been customer favorites for years, such as Scottish Oatcakes and Quinoa-stuffed Collard Wraps. Each recipe is designated whether it is gluten free, vegetarian or vegan.

To celebrate our book’s release, I’m going to give away three signed copies of this book. I received “A Taste of Oregon” as a wedding gift nearly 20 years ago. Of my several hundred cookbooks, the dog eared recipes in this book remain family favorites.

I am very fond of The Allergy Self-Help Cookbook by Marjorie Hurt Jones. Most of the recipes are free of corn, gluten, sugar, wheat, egg, milk, soy and yeast. This is very helpful when one has at least 22 food allergies.

I am a Southern Living at HOME consultant and one of my favorite cookbooks from Southern Living is “Fix it and Forget it” a slow-cooker cookbook. Before I discovered this book my idea of cooking was Fix it or Forget it!

The book I can’t live without is my family circle cookbook. I have had this book for over 15 years and it is all worn, the binding is falling apart, pages are earmarked, pages have splotches of food from past cooking sessions, and it is full of notes in the margins. It is like my cooking Bible.

I love The New Mayo Clinic Cookbook. It’s full of heart healthy recipies and it’s beautifully presented. Recipies include a breakdown of nutrients as well as calorie and fat content. The book also features shopping tips and menu strategies.

For the basics of the culinary arts the Joy of Cooking out-shines all other books on my shelf. Hopefully their next edition will contain more information on substitutions, especially gluten-free. Gluten-free is growing – they’re bound to notice the trend.

A cookbook with recipes using whole grains would be a wonderful addition to my collection of cookbooks, as my doctor says I should eat a “low glycemic” diet, because of insulin intolerance.

Hard to choose just one cookbook I couldn’t live without. I use so many! However, I think my favorite is a compilation of family recipes that was put together by my partner’s Mom, and given to him as a gift when he went off to college more than 20 years ago. It’s a handwritten collection, which we’ve added to over the years with new favorites. We love making his childhood recipes, especially the one for blueberry cobbler!

My favorite cookbook has to be the one my mother made of all our family favorite recipes. About three years ago the three daughters got together for the first time in a long time to celebrate the holidays with our mother and she surprised us with the cookbook. It’s filled with not only the recipes we grew up with, but little stories about where the recipe came from, what it meant to her to make them and funny things we did or said the first time she made them. It is one of my most precious treasures.


Ever since I was first married in 1967, the Better Homes & Gardens has been a reference. In fact, I learned how to cook using that cookbook.

Growing up I used my mom’s Betty Crocker’s 1st ed. 1950’s book. I received my own new book when first married in 1979. I wanted my mother’s book when I left home, and my daughter wanted my copy when she was married. She found a 1970’s book on E-Bay and I received a 1950’s reprint a few years ago.
I get recipes from my Living Without E-mail newsletter. I haven’t any Gf books and would love to have one.

For my smoothies, I add about 1 tablespoon chia seeds and hemp protein powder along with a small banana, frozen fruit, almond milk, water and some greens such as chard or kale. You would think all those nutritious ingredients wouldn’t taste fabulous, but it does!
